How to Apply for Federal Direct Loans

Information Regarding the Federal Direct Loan Process 2010-2011 Academic Year

Before you begin the process, you will need your US Department of Education's Federal PIN number. If you have already completed a FAFSA and signed you used your Federal PIN to electronically sign your FAFSA, you will need the same Federal PIN to complete loan entrance counseling and sign your Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note. If you do not have a PIN or you have forgotten your
PIN, visit http://www.pin.ed.gov/ to obtain your PIN. You must provide a valid email address and receive your PIN within three days. If no email address is provided, your PIN will be mailed to the home address you indicated within seven (7) business days. If you already have your pin, please ensure that you have fulfilled the other requirements for applying for a Federal Direct Loan.

Complete the 2010-2011 FAFSA
|
Students apply for financial assistance by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The application process is an online process. Visit http://www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete the FAFSA on the Web (FOTW).

Complete Loan Entrance Counseling
|
The Entrance Counseling is a one-time required process that must be completed before receiving a student loan disbursement. To complete the Federal Direct Loan Entrance Counseling process, visit the website http://www.studentloans.gov/. You must have a federal pin in order to gain access to the loan entrance counseling process.
The Direct Loan Entrance Counseling process will walk the student through the Direct Loan borrowing process. The counseling will provide detailed information regarding Direct Lending, managing student educational expenses and the rights and responsibilities of a student loan borrower.

Sign Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note
|
Signing a Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) is an important part of the student loan process. Students may print out and mail their promissory note; however, the institution strong recommends that students sign their promissory note using their federal PIN. To sign and/or complete a Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note, visit the website http://www.studentloans.gov/.

Upon completion of above procedures and submission of all documents that may be required by Financial Aid office, Students will be notified their Financial Aid Awards in 2 to 3 weeks.
